Key Japanese Concepts

侘び寂び
Wabi-Sabi
Beauty in imperfection and impermanence
The philosophy of finding beauty in worn, weathered, or incomplete things. Central to Japanese aesthetics, tea ceremony, and garden design.
物の哀れ
Mono no Aware
The pathos of things; bittersweet transience
Awareness of impermanence tinged with sadness and appreciation. Deeply felt during cherry blossom season and in Studio Ghibli films.
生き甲斐
Ikigai
Reason for being; your purpose in life
The intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. A pillar of Japanese wellbeing.
改善
Kaizen
Continuous improvement
The practice of always seeking to improve, even by small increments. Applied in manufacturing, personal life, martial arts, and business worldwide.
Ma
Negative space; meaningful pause or emptiness
The conscious use of space, silence, and pause in art, architecture, music, and conversation. "Ma" is what makes a room breathe.
木漏れ日
Komorebi
Sunlight filtering through leaves
One of Japan's beloved "untranslatable" words — the interplay of light and leaves when sunlight shines through a forest canopy.

Japan Travel Etiquette

🚇 On the Train
Speak quietly or not at all. Silent carriages are respected. Priority seats for elderly and pregnant. No eating on local trains.
👞 At Temples & Homes
Remove shoes before entering. Look for a genkan (entryway) and step-up. Slippers are usually provided inside.
🍜 At Restaurants
Slurping noodles is acceptable — even a compliment. Tipping is not customary and can be considered rude. Say "Itadakimasu" before eating.
🙇 Bowing
A slight bow (15°) is a casual greeting. Deeper bows (30–45°) show respect. Avoid bowing while shaking hands — pick one.
🗑️ No Trash Cans
Public waste bins are rare. Carry a small bag for your rubbish until you find a convenience store or your accommodation.
💴 Cash is King
Many restaurants and smaller shops are cash-only. 7-Eleven ATMs reliably accept international cards. Always carry some yen.

01 — Executive Summary

Otaku Compass is a digital platform launched in 2026, dedicated to making Japanese culture, language, and pop culture accessible to a global audience. Built for anime fans, Japan enthusiasts, and curious minds worldwide, it combines AI-powered Q&A, a curated visual gallery, and a comprehensive Japanese phrase dictionary into one unified experience.

This whitepaper outlines our vision, the problem we solve, our approach to content curation, AI integration, and our roadmap for the future.

"Japan's cultural output — from anime to architecture, from ramen to robotics — has become one of the most globally beloved and studied in human history. Yet quality, accessible English-language resources remain frustratingly fragmented."

02 — The Problem

Despite Japan's massive cultural influence globally, people who love Japanese culture face several persistent challenges:

  • Fragmentation: Information is scattered across dozens of wikis, forums, YouTube channels, and apps — no single quality hub exists.
  • Low editorial quality: Much existing content is either overly academic or shallow fan wikis with no curation.
  • Language disconnect: Existing language resources rarely connect vocabulary to cultural context — you learn words but not meaning.
  • No AI-first approach: Existing platforms haven't embraced conversational AI for discovery, personalized recommendations, and Q&A.
  • Poor design: Most Japan/anime resource sites are poorly designed, making extended exploration unpleasant.

03 — Our Solution

Otaku Compass addresses these gaps through three core pillars, united by a shared design language and editorial philosophy:

  • AI Chat: Powered by Claude AI (Anthropic), our AI answers any Japan-related question in natural English — from anime lore to cultural etiquette — with Japan-specific contextual prompting.
  • Visual Gallery: Editorially curated images organized by six themes, offering visual context alongside informational depth and cultural captions.
  • Living Dictionary: 2,400+ phrase and vocabulary entries spanning 8 categories — everyday Japanese, anime slang, honorifics, food vocabulary, travel phrases, and cultural expressions — with romaji, hiragana, and usage examples.

04 — Technology

Otaku Compass is built with a focus on speed, accessibility, and AI-first design:

  • Frontend: Single-file HTML with semantic structure and zero framework dependencies — maximum performance, works on any device.
  • AI Engine: Claude (Anthropic) API with Japan-specific system prompting for accurate, nuanced, culturally-informed answers.
  • Content Database: Hand-verified dictionary of 2,400+ entries across 8 vocabulary categories.
  • Design System: Custom design language inspired by Japanese editorial aesthetics — clean, typographic, and culturally referential.
  • Privacy: No user data storage, no tracking beyond anonymized analytics. Session-only chat memory.

05 — Target Audience

  • Anime & Manga Fans — seeking deeper cultural understanding behind the content they love
  • Japan Travelers — preparing trips with practical language and cultural knowledge
  • Japanese Language Learners — wanting contextual, culturally-grounded vocabulary
  • Cultural Enthusiasts — interested in Japanese art, design, fashion, food, and history
  • Educators — teachers looking for quality reference material on Japanese culture

About Otaku Compass

We're a team of Japan enthusiasts, developers, and language specialists on a mission to make Japanese culture accessible to the world.

01 — Our Mission

Otaku Compass was born from a simple frustration: despite Japan being one of the most culturally influential countries in the world, quality English-language resources were fragmented, poorly designed, and rarely culturally grounded.

We set out to build one beautiful, reliable destination for anyone who loves Japan — whether you're a lifelong anime fan, a first-time traveler, a language learner, or simply curious about one of the world's most fascinating cultures.

"Japan deserves better than scattered wikis and low-effort fan sites. We built the resource we always wished existed."

02 — What We Offer

Otaku Compass is built around three core pillars: a hand-curated Visual Gallery across six cultural categories, a 2,400+ entry Japanese dictionary with real usage examples, and a Quick Reference guide covering anime, culture, philosophy, and travel etiquette.

Everything is free, requires no account, and works on any device. We believe access to cultural knowledge should be frictionless.

03 — Our Team

We are a distributed team of Japan culture lovers united by a shared passion for authentic, high-quality content.
